Utilizing Design-Based Learning and Sociotransformative Constructivism to Inform Engineering Professional Development for K-12 Teachers
Tajma Cameron, MS, MAT
PhD Student in Educational Leadership and Policy
School of Education
My preferred full name is Tajma Cameron, and I obtained a BS in Biology and MS in Biotechnology Studies, and a MAT with a concentration in Biology. I am a certified Biology teacher in Maryland and Pennsylvania. I am currently in the Ph.D. in Education program in the School of Education with a concentration in Education Leadership and Policy. I am originally from Brooklyn, NY and I chose Drexel for my graduate education due to the diversity in the School of Education and an emphasis on asset-based research when focusing on Black and Brown students. What I love most about Drexel is the knowledge that the professors are sharing through coursework, assistantships, and projects. My research interest revolves around the role of culturally affirming STEM enrichment programs in fostering the formation of Black girls’ STEM identity. My career goals include becoming a professor to pre-service teachers and focusing on the ways in which teachers can use culturally sustaining curriculums and instructional practices to become quality teachers that are culturally competent. Some key accomplishments to date have been being accepted to major conferences such as the Hawaii International Education Conference, NERA, SERA, and CQIE. Also, my colleague Turea Hutson and I were awarded the third-place poster winners at the Drexel conference in 2021 and I had an OP-ED published in February 2021 with the Philadelphia Inquirer, and most recently being a recipient of the Teck-Kah Lim subsidy award for 2022.

Casper Voyles, MPH
PhD Candidate, Community Health and Prevention
Dornsife School of Public Health
Casper Voyles, MPH (he/him) is a PhD Candidate in Community Health and Prevention at Dornsife School of Public Health. Originally from the great state of Minnesota, he grew up playing ice hockey and later translated his skating skills to roller derby; each of these settings (along with track & field) inspired his interest in sports inclusion for sexual and gender minorities (SGM), which is currently the focus of his dissertation. Dornsife's expertise in SGM health initially brought Casper to Drexel and Philadelphia to complete his Master of Public Health and has valued the mentorship and opportunities he received throughout his graduate studies. Casper also has a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Russian Language & Culture from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

In addition to being a research analyst she also had the privilege of satisfying her love for teaching by co-instructing “Machine Learning & Data Science for Public Health Research” where she taught some of her favorite topics like version control with Git, modern R programming and developing web applications. In the community, Layla virtually co-organizes the Miami chapter of R-Ladies, is a Google WomenTechmakers Ambassador and is a facilitator of Google’s #IamRemarkable initiative. She is eager to pursue her research interests at Drexel where she hopes to traverse the intersection of natural language processing methodology, substances of abuse and filling knowledge gaps with an array of novel data sources. While she's not chasing her academic dreams, Layla enjoys hiking, improving her green thumb and cultivating her appreciation for wines.
